A new scheme has been put in place to alert the public as soon as a child has been abducted in their area. Under the new plan, the police will send out text messages to registered subscribers in the vicinity of the kidnapping.
The scheme is the latest initiative in a nationwide alert system for child kidnappings that has been in operation since the beginning of last year. There has been a huge demand for more to be done to alert the public and improve the chances of saving a child, following the abduction and killing of a young girl in 2007, and the murder of an older boy in 2009.
Only those who have subscribed to the service (for a registration fee of Fr. 0.20.-) will receive the new messages. You can register for the alert service by sending the following text "START ALERT (PC)" to "77777", where PC represents the post code of the area most frequented by the subscriber. (Example, "START ALERT 8000"). Alternatively you can enter your details on the following website: http://www.kidnappingalert.ch/Pages/Register.aspx

Christmas Eve Service, 24 December – 17h00
Trade in the last edition and get a new one for just Fr. 25.-!
Don’t forget to bring along a copy of your Know-it-all passport to Leman Expat Fair, which is taking place on Sunday, 31 October from 11h-17h, at Beaulieu in Lausanne.
Lisa Cirieco-Ohlman, editor of the book, is repeating the special offer she made at Expat Expo earlier in the month, and is asking customers to bring in their 2009/2010 edition. All you have to do is find your old green copy at home and bring it to Lisa on the stand (table 21) who will trade it in for the new edition for just Fr. 25.-. Since the regular price is Fr. 38.- in stores, this is a great incentive to upgrade.
A team of 14 people updated the 7th edition, which includes over 700 pages and features literally hundreds of new entries. In response to customer demand, two new sections covering NIGHT LIFE and CHOCOLATE have also been added.
Called Baby Best Friend (www.babybestfriend.ch), this comprehensive online platform, aims to put parents in touch with independent child-care workers, who can be selected according to a range of different criteria. You can indicate, for example, whether you require a baby sitter, nanny or day care mother, where you live and what language you speak.
Browsing the database contained within the website requires no registration and is absolutely free. The database provides a short profile on each candidate, excluding their full name and contact details. Once you find a potential candidate, you are asked to register for membership in order to obtain the contact information and full profile details for all baby-sitters, nannies, day-care moms, etc. on the site.
Explaining why she decided to set up the website, Baby Best Friend founder, Yasmina, says, “ Given the high number of families moving into and out of the Geneva area, it is clear that many of the traditional support networks provided by extended families in the last century do not exist for many families here. This is often due to relocation from one's place of origin due to work, but can also be due to marriage or just simply life's circumstances.”
Don’t forget to bring along a copy of your Know-it-all passport to Expat-Expo, which is taking place this Sunday, 10 October from 11h-17h, at Palexpo in Geneva.

To help readers look up information more quickly than before, all entries have been reclassified to form a new, improved TABLE OF CONTENTS. The new sections can be easily identified by the full-page photos, which were sent in for our photography contest - see the winner's names here. Thousands of individual entries can also be accessed via the 27-page index at the back of the book.
A percentage of the profits of Know-it-all passport are being donated to the Alzheimer’s Association, another reason to continue to purchase the new edition!
So don’t forget to bring your old copy to Expat-Expo (www.expat-expo.info/Geneva.html) and take advantage of this great offer, which lasts for one day only on Sunday 10 October!
