Raising Multilingual Children: Foreign Language Acquisition and Children
This interactive workshop on raising multilingual children will be led, once again, by the world-renowned specialist in education and neuroscience, Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa, Ph.D.. Half Japanese-American and half Irish-Native American, Tracey is married to an Ecuadorian and has 3 adult children who all speak fluent English, Spanish and German, and some French.
Currently teaching a successful course on The Neurscience of Learning and Achievement at Harvard University Extension School and Harvard College, Tracey has written numerous books on the brain and learning. Her first book, “Raising Multilingual Children: Foreign Language Acquisition and Children”, is especially popular with international parents facing the challenges of raising children in a multilingual environment. She has now written 11 books and keeps going! Her latest book is entitled, "Questions Kids Ask About Their Brains: How the Answers Help Students Learn and Teachers Teach".
Language acquisition: the key to success
According to Tracey, there are Ten Key Factors, which influence every student’s success with new languages:
- Timing
- Aptitude
- Motivation
- Strategy
- Consistency
- Opportunity
- Language Typology
- Siblings
- Gender
- Hand-use
Each person will combine these “ingredients” together in their own unique “recipe” for learning. Tracey's workshop will familiarize teachers and parents with these factors and suggest tools for enhancing those which are shaped in the school context.
Tracey will explain how children learn languages and answer your questions. For example:
- Is it ok to have 2, 3, 4 languages at the same time or is it better for children to learn languages consecutively?
- When should your children learn multiliteracy skills?
- Who should speak what in order to maximize the best language skills?
- Should you learn a foreign language alongside your children?
- Raising your child multilingually has worked so far, but now your child is growing up and you have different questions about identity, literacy, strategy, etc.
- Come with your own questions and be prepared to share your own concerns about the best way to raise multilingual children.
Given Tracey's ongoing research in this field, workshop participants can expect to learn more about the very latest studies on human language learning and multilingualism. Tracey will also share some of the results from her research project focusing on the neural correlates of reading (i.e. how the brain reads).
Workshops and private meetings in Geneva
With such a busy work schedule, Tracey doesn't often have the chance to share her knowledge so Know-it-all passport® is very fortunate to have been asked to host another workshop for her again. Following the success of last time's private meetings, Tracey will also meet parents requiring specific guidance on a particular issue for one-to-one meetings, which can be booked during daytime private meetings.
As with previous events, participants will be able to download a copy of the presentation after they have attended the workshop.
