ESCA FUNFUNFUNDRAISER article

If you’re looking for a fun way to get involved in raising money for charity, then the English Speaking Cancer Association has just come up with a great idea!

Rather than organizing a single event to raise funds, they are inviting the public to organize their own parties, all on the same day: 5th May, or Cinco de Mayo as they say in Spanish.

Cinco de Mayo is an annual festival in the US, originally commemorating the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on 5 May 1862. Now a relatively minor festival in Mexico, it has gained a significant following in the US, evolving into a celebration of Mexican-American culture and heritage.

With this in mind, ESCA is inviting the public to get out their sombreros, buy in the tacos and tortillas, and put on their pointy dancing boots to organize a series of Cinco de Mayo Mexican Fiesta theme parties, the likes of which Switzerland has never seen before!

To make the task easier for you, the association has provided a handy guide that will help you through the process of inviting friends and, of course, raising money: all donations from your Fiesta will enable ESCA to carry on providing emotional support and practical help to all those affected by cancer in this region – free of charge.

asperger spouse

Are you in a marriage or relationship with a person with Asperger Syndrome/ High Functioning Autism? Or do you think you are?

Would you like to talk to others in the same situation, share your experience and exchange tips on how best to manage?

If these questions resonate with you, then you should consider attending one of the upcoming meetings being organized by Cassandra, a new self-help group for spouses and partners of people with Asperger Syndrome.

Launched in September 2017 by a 48-year old mother of two, married 22 years to someone with Asperger’s, the group provides support and resources for a community of people who often feel overwhelmed by the behaviour of their partners. Wishing to remain anonymous, the founder told knowitall.ch,

“My marriage has not been easy. When I discovered five years ago that Asperger’s might be the explanation for all those difficulties, it came as both a shock and a relief. Setting up a peer support network for partners is my way of doing something constructive with what I have learned before and after that discovery.”

Located 5 minutes above the village of Aigle in Vaud, the Happy Dogs Aigle boarding and daycare center must offer one of the most tranquil settings for a dog center that you will ever see.

Surrounded by mountains and forests, it provides a real home from home for your dog – a place where your favorite hound will love to visit whilst you head off on holiday.

Owner, Aileen Woulfe, told knowitall.ch, “Our aim is to look after your dog as if they are one of our own. That means lots of walks, fun and belly rubs, homely accommodation with plenty of family contact, stimulation, exercise and quality quiet time.”

About Aileen

Aileen Woulfe is an Irish expat, who has lived in Switzerland since 2004. After a career in medical international sales and marketing, she decided to find a way to be self-employed and happy, which for her, meant working with dogs - so she retrained and received a diplôme cynologique in breeding, grooming and kennel management.  Once she had found the premises and got the necessary permissions, she then persuaded her husband, Ronan, to move with her from their “normal village house” to a farm half way up a mountain!

A local neuroscientist, health and nutrition consultant, Dr. Irina Schurov, has launched a new “recovery” program that will empower parents to help children overcome a wide range of learning difficulties and general health issues.

Called the DNA Nourishing Program, this new initiative uses a nutritional and nutrigenomic approach to help children improve concentration and learn more effectively, especially those with Special Education Needs (SEN), including the autistic spectrum and ADHD.

Explaining the rationale for her new program to knowitall.ch, Dr. Schurov told us,

“After years of working in the field of neuroscience alongside experts in academic labs as well as pharmaceutical and biotech companies, I have soon come to realize that the epidemic of chronic diseases that we are facing needs to be addressed through prevention and nutrition. I set up my own business, LiveRight, to help families raise healthy and happy children, especially those suffering with conditions like autism and ADHD.”

She continued, “I have designed a program to nourish, support and reboot their bodies and brain function on a DNA level. It is based on 3 basic principles. Only when we understand them, believe in them and apply them in our life, can we begin to change the common misconceptions about these complex conditions and start addressing them as treatable and preventable disorders effecting the whole body. I help people to make this important shift, enabling them to get on the recovery path.  I also love my public speaking activities and workshops that help to raise awareness and empower parents to make changes."
