momsworkoutA new club has formed in Nyon, offering women the opportunity to take part in sports activities that are suited to their lifestyle and fitness level.

Called SHEzone, the club opened in Spring with the launch of MOMMYzone, a fitness programme targeted at mothers. Although the first classes have already started, it is possible to join a course at any time.  A choice of two classes is being offered, involving moms, babies and their strollers, and these are being held in Nyon at either the Parc & Sentier du Boiron or the Parc du Bourg-de-Rive, or in Geneva at the Parc Mon Repos.

The Stroller-circuit  class is open to all fitness levels and combines cardio drills with strength-training exercises, to target all of the major muscle groups.  Abnominal excercises, mat Pilates and yoga techniques are also used to strengthen and tone your body.

saleve1If you’re a keen walker and enjoy hiking on the Salève, then you’ve probably noticed the build up of waste, left on the mountain during last year’s hiking season.

Not only is it very unsightly, but much of it can harm animals living on the mountain as they step on pieces of broken glass, or try to eat plastic bags left lying around on the ground.

Christophe HUMBLOT, a member of the Association Sangha sur Salève, is keen to clear up the paths before the new hiking season starts in earnest. To get things moving, he’s decided, with the Association, to arrange a special half-day walk, called “For a Clean Salève”.

saleve2Taking place on Saturday 28th May, participants are invited to meet at 9am at the lower station of the Salève cable car (téléphérique), where they will be given a briefing about the morning walk.  The cable car will be offered free of charge to all those taking part in the event.

Once at the top, hikers will walk along the Saleve, collecting waste as they go.  Rubbish will be stored in waste bags that can be left on the side of the road, to be collected later by a separate vehicle.  At noon, a minibus will collect all the participants and take them to the Town Hall of Monnetier-Mornex, where they can enjoy a light meal, and congratulate themselves on a job well done!

monikaA new tennis school will open soon near Lausanne, aimed at children aged between 4 and 14 years old.

Called My Way Tennis, the school will be headed up by Monika Maj, a former Swiss junior singles champion who played regularly with Martina Hingis, and represented Switzerland at many international junior tournaments.

The first course of lessons will run from 2nd May until 3rd July and will cover mini tennis (ages 4-6) and Junior tennis (ages 7-14).  A Summer school is also planned for later in the year.

Originally from Poland, but having lived in Switzerland for 30 years, Monika is passionate about tennis, which she started playing at the young age of 6.  With her natural ability for the sport, she received the first of her three junior championship titles at the age of 12.

However, at the age of 15, she retired from competitive sport due to the high pressure of intense training and decided to continue with her educational studies.  Having passed her maturity exams and started working at Reuters in Geneva, she soon found the lure of tennis too great and returned to the courts, training with Swiss Tennis to become a coach.

After teaching tennis for many years in Geneva, and marrying a British ex-pat living in Lutry (where she lives currently with her 8 month old son), Monika has now decided the best way to combine her passion for tennis with her family life is to set up a school in Lutry!  Her new classes will be held on a court in the heart of Lutry old village, on the corner of Rue Friporte and Rue de Vevey.

Commenting on the new school, Monika says, “Whilst I am keen to pass on my knowledge of tennis at competition level, I believe it is essential to maintain a sense of enjoyment in the sport at all times.  Children who join my classes can be sure of having lots of fun, as well as the opportunity to progress to higher levels of competitive tennis should they wish it.”

Our chapter on Chocolate! in Know-it-all passport 2011/2012 can be found on pages 199-206.

All Swiss chocolate is not the same, as we’re sure you have already discovered!

Commercial chocolate is good, but the hand-crafted stuff is better! Tempt your taste-buds with these small family-run businesses. You will usually be surprised at how different they are and how they will make chocolate-eating a whole new experience! Some of these places are also tea-rooms and serve their own specialty of homemade hot chocolate; you literally need a spoon to eat it!

It is fun to peer through the windows of these shops as the holiday themes make their appearance. Apart from the obvious: Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, there are cute themes such as the Car Show in March, Poisson d’Avril (see page 210), chestnuts in September, and the Marmite de l’Escalade (see page 203). As demands are high in the chocolate-giving seasons, make sure to order in advance.
