Often, as parents, we are looking to find that magical balance between fun and education for our kids.  In the Summer time this can be especially true when we want our kids to have a great time, making the most of the weather (assuming the sunshine arrives eventually), enjoying lazy days free of the pressure of the school run and the tight week day schedules.  On the other hand we don’t want our kids to lose the habit of learning and to keep their curiosity alive.

Teachers at TutorsPlus, the Geneva-based organization providing tutors throughout Switzerland, don’t feel that these two goals are mutually exclusive.  When they were setting up their Summer Camp this year, they gave their teachers the challenge to create workshops that will give kids the chance to have a brilliant time, make new friends, have fun and be really creative whilst learning at the same time.

From 18 to 20 May, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in Geneva will re-open its doors for a long weekend of festivities during which the public will be invited to discover its new Permanent Exhibition, “The Humanitarian Adventure”.

After 22 months of closure for renovation, the museum has invited a series of talented artists, dancers, musicians and illustrators to mark this special occasion with a number of free events suitable for both young and old.

On top of a magnificently choreographed dance performance by Foofwa d’Imobilité, a highly charged spectacle by the French company Transe-Express  featuring  flying drums, musical performances  by the well-known jazz pianist, Léo Tardin, and Afro-Pop musician, John Arcadius, there will be a breath-taking performance by Alain Roche, and his suspended piano!

Nyon-based organizer of activities for women, Charlaine Jannerfeldt of SHEzone, has partnered with local photographer, Michelle Petersen, to offer clients a unique outdoor experience: hiking through some of the most beautiful areas of the Jura mountains whilst learning essential photography skills that will help you to capture these special moments on your camera.

The new 5-stage hiking and photography course, will explore basic technical and artistic skills that will enable you to understand your camera and take better images. Each hike, in which you will be accompanied by a certified mountain guide, will cover a different nature theme and will delve into specific photographic skills that will help you make the most of your camera in that particular setting.

Michelle, who was one of the winners in last year's Know-it-all passport photography competition, told knowitall.ch, “As local mumpreneurs, Charlaine and I knew about each other’s businesses and had great appreciation for each other's work.  So when Charlaine wanted to add photographic hikes to the long list of activities she offers women and their families in this region, she approached me, and I was more than excited to cooperate with her on this project! The synergy between our two family-oriented businesses means we can offer something really special to our clients, which they are unlikely to experience elsewhere.”

Following on from the huge success of last year’s ice hockey tournament in Geneva for 11-14 year olds, the Genève Future Hockey Association are once again inviting hundreds of ice hockey players from around the world to share their passion for hockey in a friendly but competitive environment. Last year, 32 teams from 11 countries took part in the Genève Futur Hockey Challenge tournament, with daily crowds of more than 1500 people supporting the event.

The 3rd edition of this high energy, youth tournament will take place on 4 – 7 April 2013, and will see some of the best young male and female hockey players from around the world showcase their talents in front of an audience of enthusiastic local supporters.  Russia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden, France, Turkey and Spain have all signed up for the tournament and, like the host nation, Switzerland, will each enter a number of teams. This year, 28 teams will compete to win the coveted trophy offered in each of the 4 different categories.

Tournament Director, Cindy Burwell, told knowitall.ch, “ We’re really excited by this year’s line up of teams, which includes participants from countries like Turkey where hockey is only just developing as a recognized sport.  But the Hockey Challenge is more than just a hockey tournament – it provides a platform for cultural interaction where young people can create long-lasting friendships and take home with them memories, which they will never forget.”
