Swapping seems to be all the rage in Switzerland at the moment. Following on in the same vein as our recently announced SwapParty event, we have now received details on a new swapping event, this time for food.

Taking place for the first time in Lutry on 4 December, Le Food Swap has been organized with the purpose of encouraging people to eat locally, sustainably and affordably through the swapping and sharing of homemade, home grown goods.  The aim is to create an outlet for home cooks, gardeners, foragers, DIY enthusiasts and bakers of all ages and nationalities to meet up and swap their homemade creations. The event will provide a unique opportunity where locals and expats, young and old can break down barriers, practice their language skills and connect through common interests.

Participants are invited to bring their own favorite homemade jams, pickles & preserves, fresh baked goods, sauces and pestos, as well as homegrown produce such as vegetables and fruit, handmade soaps, candles, teas and spices. All swap items will be directly traded between participants, e.g.an apple tart for a jar of pickles or a loaf of bread.

Organizer, Penny Ross, told knowitall.ch, “After fifteen years working in international event management and three years in fundraising for charities, I set up Anahata, a not-for-profit organization, to arrange special events such as Le Food Swap that raise funds for good causes.  By coming to events like this, we hope people will see the benefits of moving from “Conventional to Conscious Consumption”, and will continue to get involved in issues, which have a direct impact on personal and environmental health.”

In addition to the swapping of food there will be other activities taking place throughout the morning of Le Food Swap, including a second hand book sale.  Emma Sorrentino (www.sante-nature.ch) has also volunteered to run a special workshop, providing free nutritional advice on staying healthy, and there will be the opportunity to enjoy coffee and delicious Christmas treats at the Anahata Community Coffee. Entrance to Le Food Swap is free but you must pre-register at (www.ana-hata.ch/campaign/le-food-swap/). You are, however, advised to book early as the event is limited to a maximum of 40 participants.

Since each Food Swap will have a designated charity, all proceeds from this Swap (over and above the costs) will be donated to the “Christmas for All” project. This includes ‘La Soupe à l’Ours’, a special event on 24th December organized by students from Bugnon High school in Lausanne, where less fortunate individuals and families are invited to a warm and welcoming space in which they can share a hot Christmas lunch and receive warm clothing, basic food supplies, and a special gift for their children.  Given the nature of this charity, participants to the first Food Swap are asked to donate books, warm clothing, shoes, basic food stocks and toys that can be distributed at the charity event.
