Refugee Food is a global project run by an association, which aims to raise awareness of the situation of refugees, accelerate the professional integration of refugees in the catering industry, and work towards tasty, fair and sustainable food for all. Initially a culinary festival born in 2016, the project has broadly diversified to become a global project responding to the various issues of reception and integration in France and Geneva.

Nearly a hundred establishments, from Michelin-starred restaurants to neighborhood canteens, are opening their stoves to refugee cooks for unique culinary collaborations. The aim of this culinary and solidarity event is to change the way we look at refugees by promoting their culinary heritage, to speed up their integration into the catering industry, and to mobilize civil society around the table!

Project objective
Refugees have been forced to flee their countries because of persecution (political, sexual orientation, membership of an ethnic or social group, etc.), and neighboring France has recognized their primary need for protection under the Geneva Convention. Currently, nearly 83 million people are displaced worldwide, a figure that has doubled in 10 years according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Human migration has existed since time immemorial, and for a variety of reasons, forced migration is intensifying today. At the same time, part of the European population is turning its back on welcoming foreigners onto its soil, and even rejecting the very principle of the right of asylum and open borders. Diversity and intercultural exchange contribute to the richness of our society, our territories and our heritage.

Refugee Food is convinced that building a peaceful society on these issues depends in particular on the mobilization of citizens, access to essential rights, training and professional integration, one of the keys to inclusion.

Refugee Food believes that cooking has the universal power to bring society together, to create spaces for pleasure, exchange and encounters, and to highlight know-how and heritage.

They also want to give those who so desire access to the catering professions, which currently have almost 300,000 vacancies. Finally, the organizers of Refugee Food believe that access to quality food for all is essential. Offering a hot, tasty meal to those who are too often deprived of it means offering a little pleasure and comfort, but also dignity.
