Transhumance Festival

Every year in early October, the shepherds and cowherds bring their animals down from the high mountain pastures, the “alpages,” to spend the winter in the warmth of the barns..

In an effort to honor and remind us of this tradition that dates back to the middle ages, the Annecy-Traditions association has revived this annual festival..

During the festival, visitors can admire the farm animals and traditional farming methods, and enjoy local foods and specialties.. This family oriented festival wouldn’t be a festival without folk songs and dances accompanied by the sounds of traditional instruments..

The high point of the festival is the parade of animals and people wearing traditional costumes led by horse-drawn carts through the streets of old town Annecy..
