Have you always wanted to work in your garden but been daunted by the sheer scale of your space? Do you find trees, bulbs, shrubs and flowers a mystery? Have you been disappointed with the results in your vegetable plot? Would you like to improve your skills, knowledge and success in your garden?

If so, then you may be interested to sign up for one of the many courses being organized this Autumn at the newly-opened Swiss Gardening School.

Headed up by British-trained Horticulturalist and Garden Designer, Hester Macdonald, and her enthusiastic, self-taught gardening partner, Tara Lissner, the Swiss Gardening School aims to provide enjoyable and easy-to-follow introductory courses for gardening novices, as well as advanced courses for more experienced amateurs who would like to expand their knowledge. Course sizes are small, with between 8 and 12 participants, enabling Hester and Tara to combine group work with individualized attention. All instruction is in English.

As a host on the garden-themed weekly radio show “Dig It” on World Radio Switzerland (WRS) since 2003, many of you may already feel that you "know" Hester very well! Following the creation of her company, HM Garden Design, Hester won the prestigious inaugural Concours Laurent Perrier Prix du Jury 2009 at the Jardins en Fete, Coppet. She told knowitall.ch

"Although I possibly have more gardening experience than Tara, she is actually the brains behind all the organization - without her I don't think our school would ever have happened!  I focus on the teaching, along with a few other teachers who help us out, all of whom are professionally qualified with the Royal Horticultural Society, including one from Australia!"

She continued,"Whether you are a complete beginner, or a more experienced gardener, the Swiss Gardening School has a course that's right for you. Our practical, modular day-courses are perfect for combining gardening skills and theory to give you great results every time. Come and join us!"

Tara added, "We have recently been nominated for the British Swiss Chamber of Commerce award for the Most Innovative New Business. The winners will be announced on 1 November 2012, so we're keeping our fingers crossed!"

With over 16 courses already scheduled for this year, you are more than likely to find a course to suit you. The season opened on 11 September with "Winter Colour and Spring Blooms", and will be quickly followed by another one-day course entitled "The Edible Garden - Vegetables" on 20 September. Starting in October there is a four-day course for the complete novice,  called "How to Garden". Further topics include design, pruning, containers, lovely lawns, and organic gardening.
