“Meet the authors” at GEMS World Academy Switzerland on 1 September 2016
Win a double ticket to attend a VIP literary cruise in Morges on 3 September 2016 (see end of article for more details)
GEMS World Academy Switzerland (GWAS) is offering the public two great opportunities to meet and mingle with top authors at the 7th edition of the annual literary festival in Morges, Le Livre Sur Les Quais.
Taking place beside the lake between 2 and 4 September 2016, the festival will host around 300 French- and English-speaking writers, covering a wide range of literary genres from children’s books through to travel writing and crime fiction. A comprehensive programme of talks, readings and round-table discussions has been set up throughout the 3 days of the event, some of them taking place on the lake in the form of literary cruises, as well as at various venues in and around Morges. This year the English program will be enriched by the presence of Scandinavian writers who are the guests of honour this year.
As one of the main sponsors of this event, GWAS is kick-starting the festival with a special evening presentation by two famous authors, Stephen Clarke and Marie Laberge, at its campus in Etoy, Vaud on Thursday, 1 September. With an limited attendance of around 150 people, "Meet the Authors" is open to the general public, VIPs, and families of students at the school.
As the bestselling author of seven books of fiction and non-fiction that satirize the peculiarities of French culture, Stephen Clarke will no doubt have plenty to say about the challenges of living in a French-speaking country! In 2004, he self-published A Year in the Merde, a comic novel skewering contemporary French society. The novel was an instant success and led to numerous follow-ups, including Dial M for Merde (2008), 1,000 Years of Annoying the French (2010), and Paris Revealed (2011).
As an actress, educator and author, Marie Laberge will have a wide, general appeal to all those attending the event. Laberge began the study of journalism at Laval University but entered the Conservatoire d'Art Dramatique de Québec soon afterwards. She began work in comedy before branching out into playwriting (for which she won numerous awards), staging productions and teaching drama. Laberge also wrote the lyrics for the Celine Dion song "Le temps qui compte", which was included on the D'elles album. Her trilogy “Taste for Happiness” has sold over 500,000 copies.
Doors open at 17h30 and the event will start promptly at 18h, followed by book-signing and an aperitif. RSVP is necessary as places are limited.
If you can’t make this special event, GWAS has kindly offered Know-it-all passport and Living in Nyon, one ticket each to its exclusive VIP cocktail cruise being held at the festival on the afternoon of Saturday, 3 September. To make the event more fun for our readers, we have decided to join forces and offer these tickets as a double package, i.e. two tickets for one lucky reader, who will have the opportunity to meet two talented female musicians and authors: Brigitte Hool, a Swiss Soprano singer and author; and H. J Lim, a renowned pianist and writer. Journalist, Nine Simon, will host the event.
To enter our competition and give yourself a chance of winning a double ticket to this exclusive event, just fill in this form and let us know which edition of Le Livre Sur Les Quais is being held this year. Only one entry per person and per email is allowed. The competition closes at midnight on Wednesday, 31 August 2016. The names of all those submitting correct answers will be placed into the digital hat and the winner’s name drawn at random on Thursday, 1 September 2016. The winner will be notified by email and his/her name will be added to this article after the competition closes.
