If you’re driving to England over the Summer holidays and are looking for somewhere to break your journey, then the Caribou B&B in Givenchy-en-Gohelle may be just the place for you.
Situated just 5 minutes drive from the No. 7 exit on the A26 autoroute (near Arras), this charming, converted farmhouse has everything you need to unwind after a long journey on the road.
Each of the 3 guestrooms on offer is tastefully decorated in a contemporary style and very spacious – at least compared to many of the motels frequently used by motorway travellers in this part of the world. Families are catered for by including extra airbeds for children in the standard double room – which includes an extremely substantial double bed and a very large shower room, with separate toilet – at least they did in the two rooms that we stayed in.
As you enter the accommodation “wing”, Brigitte, the owner will show you a large “communal area” where you are welcome to help yourself to a beer, or make coffee and tea, whilst you relax in front of the television or catch up on your emails using the computer provided. (When we stayed there, we headed straight for the computer to find out how Andy Murray was doing at Wimbledon!). An honesty “pig” is provided to pay for the drinks which are very reasonably priced.
If you wish, you can ask Brigitte to prepare dinner for you, but this must be booked in advance. We didn’t try this option, and headed out into the next village for dinner, but the comments in the guest book were extremely complimentary! We did try the breakfast, however, which Brigitte prepares for you in the communal area, and includes a vast selection of French bread and croissants, freshly squeezed orange juice, yoghurts, cheese and cereal. In fact, there was so much food that we had enough bread and cheese to make ourselves some extra sandwiches for lunch!
When you leave, don’t forget to say goodbye to the chickens that are left to roam freely in the main courtyard. They provided lots of amusement for our daughter!
