If you’re looking to buy something a little special for a little girl this Christmas, then look no further than the fabulous array of fairy/princess frocks that have been created by local seamstress and entrepreneur, Gehl Crowe.
Designed and hand-made for young girls aged between 2 and 8 years old, the costumes come in a wide range of vibrant colors and textures, and can be purchased along with a variety of accessories including beaded wands, dainty wings and glittering crowns.
The costumes are inspired by Gehl’s time spent living in Delhi when her own girls were young. She explains to knowitall.ch,
“I started making costumes for my girls when they were little and we lived in New Delhi. There was nowhere to buy costumes, and my girls loved dressing up and dancing. I loved going to the markets in Delhi and, in particular, adored all the beautiful, shiny fabrics, and sparkly, colorful items they offered for sewing on to fabrics, including mirrors and all shapes, sizes and colors of beads.”
She continues, “When someone gave me a book of costumes to make, I started making fairy skirts for the girls, which they wore all the time. Soon their friends’ moms were asking where they got them, and I made a few more. I soon realised how unique my costumes were and decided that it was something I really enjoyed doing, and wanted to make more and more. I made some headpieces, wings and wands to go with the skirts and started selling them within the expat community and at various melas and school fairs. I was even asked to create some skirts for a ballet school in New Delhi, and, in no time at all, I realised that I had created my own mini-business!”
After a temporary break from the business when Gehl moved to Manila and then Geneva, Fairy Frocks was relaunched a year ago in our local community, which, fortunately for Gehl, included parents equally keen to indulge their children’s fantasies with glittering costumes. She concludes,
“If you are looking for a fairy costume, you will often find me at the Saturday morning market in Nyon, if it’s not raining! I will also have a stall at the Ecolint La Chat Marche St. Nicholas on 25 November, and at the Nyon Christmas Market on 11 December, so look out for me there! Clients are also very welcome to contact me by phone or email to arrange to view the frocks at my home, if that is more convenient.”
The fairy frocks will fit any girl between 2 and 8 years old, and are priced at Fr. 40.-, no matter which of the amazing colors you choose. Accessories are priced at Fr. 25.- each (wands or headpieces) and wings can be purchased for Fr. 20.-. Skirts can also be made on request for older girls such as dancers.
