Last month, we were reminded once again what amazing talent exists in this region amongst our entrepreneurial readers, for example a poster created by local mom, Evelyne Cave (currently listed on page 692 of Know-it-all passport® 2015/2016).
Brought up in Geneva in English and French, Evelyne remembers only too well how confusing it was when being taught the letters of the alphabet that “a” is for apple in English, when the same object starts with a “p” (for pomme) in French.
So when she moved abroad with her husband and started to raise her own expat family of young children as bilingual speakers, she resolved to find a solution by creating her own bilingual illustrated poster of the alphabet using not only the same letters but also the same sounds for each letter in English and French.
Evelyne told knowitall.ch, “I thought it would be helpful for other families in the same situation so I enlisted the help of an illustrator. As you can see the pictures are beautifully drawn by a children's illustrator, Rebecca Price.”
To make sure that space can be found on your child’s wall, the ABC poster is half the usual poster size and has been printed in A3 format. However, if you still can’t find enough room, then Evelyne tells us that the poster can also be cut up to create some great games for kids:
- lotto, in which case you will need to buy 2 posters!
- mini puzzles, where you separate the picture from the letter and words
- learning the alphabet, where your child places the “cards” in order
The poster is particularly easy to cut up as Evelyne decided to do her bit for the environment by choosing not to laminate the poster.
Evelyne's ABC poster can be purchased from the English section of the Payot library in downtown Geneva for just Fr. 7.50.
