It’s that time of year when you have to start thinking about extra-curricular activities for your children. La rentrée (going back to school) is fast approaching and your kids will soon be badgering you to book them on their favorite course – just one of hundreds of after-school classes that are now being offered for children in this region.
One course that you might like to consider, and which is being offered at the Futurekids Geneva center for the first time this year, is STRATEGIOS. On offer on Wednesday afternoons, and Tuesday and Thursday after school, this innovative workshop uses games to help young people aged from 6 to 14 develop essential reasoning skills.
The workshops have been carefully designed to help children analyse information, structure their thought processes, think logically, make decisions and solve problems: all skills they need to succeed in their studies and professional lives. Research in US universities has shown that programs similar to SRATEGIOS have resulted in children achieving significantly improved results in standardized verbal communication and mathematical tests. Courses are adapted to varying aptitudes and abilities, and games are carefully selected to develop specific mental skills and throught processes. After playing games such as Pylos and Backgammon, your children will no longer be saying that winning is all down to luck!
Since they don’t use computers, the Strategios workshops provide an interesting alternative to the other courses run for children at Futurekids, which are based on information technology. With courses specially adapted for different age groups (4-6, 6-9, 9-12 and 13+), Futurekids IT courses range from basic image manipulation techniques through to the creation of video games and animated film production. Download this flyer to see an example of just one of their courses targeted at 6 to 9 year olds, where children can learn quite complex IT techniques within the fascinating world of African safari animals.
Whilst all courses are currently presented in French, Futurekids would be interested in offering some courses in English, if there is enough demand. Director, Pierre Sikiaridis, says,
“Our courses are very popular with French-speaking children – both in local schools and at our centers in Geneva and Lausanne - so there is no reason why English-speaking kids shouldn’t like them too! We have the capability to offer some of our courses in English, and would be interested in piloting a course if there is sufficient demand."
So, if any of these courses sound interesting to you, but you don’t think your child would enjoy them in French, why not drop Pierre a line by email and see what he can come up with!
