It is well known that the expat community likes its cupcakes – so it’s no surprise that our Know-it-all passport guide started listing them in its Birthday chapter several years ago. Fairy Cakes was the first and only company to be listed in the 2007/2008 edition of the book with owner, Melanie Goodman, being the first to offer British/American style cupcakes.
However, the market for cupcakes has expanded so much since then that it seems like we’re getting recommendations for cupcake suppliers almost every month! Between them, these companies have considered just about every possible desire for the discerning cupcake fan - read on to find out more!
One recent recommendation that seems to have most bases covered when it comes to cupcakes is Made by Sonia. Based in Geneva and run by Sonia Dionisio, Made by Sonia will provide personalized cupcakes for birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, bridal showers, christenings and tea parties. Even your dietary requirements can be personalized, with vegan, celiac (gluten free), dairy free or low fat options possible. In spite of using mostly organic produce her cakes are surprisingly inexpensive at Fr. 4.- for an American sized cupcake. With nearly 30 different flavors to choose from on the website, including Peanut Butter & Jelly, Orange & Poppy Seed, and Apple Spice, it seems hard to believe that additional flavors can also be requested!
Cuppin’s (formerly Poppin's Cupcake) in Lausanne is another recommendation to arrive recently on our desks. Founded by two moms, Dina and Yasmine, Cuppin’s not only supplies cupcakes but also provides a tearoom in which to relax and enjoy them – and a lifestyle boutique too! As you enjoy a range of homemade treats that include both sweet and salty cupcakes, you can also browse their range of decorative items for the home, in particular the kitchen. In the future, Cuppin’s plans to organize special meetings for moms, including activities such as scrapbooking classes and DIY courses.
Since it was established in 2011, the Heidi Bakery continues to grow from strength to strength. Anyone who has visited the Nyon market on Saturday mornings will have had the chance to see the Heidi Bakery stall. Each week, Heidi brings a variety of new flavors from Raspberry Ripple to Lime & Passionfruit and the stall is proving to be increasingly popular among locals and expats alike. But if you can't make it to the market, don’t worry. The Heidi Bakery website is always ready to take your orders. You can view online the range of flavors and designs that change each season and place your order directly with Heidi. As a special offer to knowitall.ch readers, the Heidi Bakery is offering a 10% discount on your first order until the end of June. (Look out for Heidi at the forthcoming Pop Up Shop sale being held by Dilookids.ch in Nyon - click here for more information).
Noe’s Cakes is also making knowitall.ch readers a special offer. If you place an order for 12 cupcakes, you will get 4 decorated butter cookies for free! Owner, Noemi Valtierra, will also make customized cakes – just take a look at her website to see her recent “Angry Birds” and “guitar” creations, as well as her decorated butter cookies! Able to speak English and Spanish, Noemi will discuss your cake requirements down to the finest detail – and will deliver in the Pays de Gex as well as Geneva.
Cupcake Heaven is one of the newest cupcake suppliers on the market. Featured recently on our website, Cupcake Heaven specializes in providing Cupcake Message Boxes, as well as other custom-made cupcakes that can be delivered in the Geneva region.
Claiming to be the original Geneva cupcake company, Fairy Cakes was launched in 2005, with the aim of providing the residents of Geneva with an alternative to supermarket cakes and French patisseries. Since that date, owner, Melanie Goodman, has expanded the business to provide home made desserts such as cheesecakes, and other items such as themed partyware and children’s “going-home” bags.
Many of the above cupcake suppliers will provide more traditional cakes if you ask them. Atelier du Sucre is no exception to this - in addition to providing homemade cakes for birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Jewish parties, christenings, retirements, moms-to-be, and going-away parties, she specializes in the creation of wedding cakes.
Below you will find the contact details of the cupcake suppliers that have been recommended to us. The new edition of Know-it-all passport® 2011/12, out in August this year, will feature these entries in the Cakes/Food section of the chapter entitled Organizing a Party.
