Currently regarded as a revolution in the nutrition and health sector, spirulina microalgae are known to have outstanding nutritional properties, with long-term benefits that combine to combat stress and fatigue while at the same detoxifying the body and strengthening the immune system. Generally taken in dry powder, tablet or pastille form, spirulina is now being produced for the first time as a fresh drink by the Swiss company, SpirAlps SA, based in Vétroz, Valais. Since the nutritional properties of spirulina are considered to be much higher when taken fresh, Spiralps drinks are a true innovation in terms of wellness and, crucially, are also much pleasanter-tasting than the dried form.
Co-Founder, Yannick Lesbros, told knowitall.ch, “To guarantee high-quality spirulina and avoid the problems of traceability or quality often encountered with cultivation in open ponds, we have chosen to produce Spiralps in a controlled environment. The microalgae grows in a closed circuit in which the different parameters (CO2, O2, temperature, pH, etc.) are computer-controlled. This system enables us to obtain an alga of consistently top-grade quality, free of contaminants.”
He continued, “We then mix the spirulina with other natural ingredients including extracts of alpine herbs and organic fruit. To extend the shelf life of the drink, without adversely affecting the nutritional benefits of Spiralps, we use a revolutionary, high pressure, cold pasteurization process, also unique in Switzerland. This avoids the need to heat the drink or add chemical preservatives. The final result is a 100% natural, organic drink, rich in vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, and fiber, with no added chemicals or refined sugar.”
Asked who the drink was targeted at, Yannick’s founding partner, Frédéric Dubois told us, “Although beneficial for everyone, Spiralps is very popular with active city-dwellers, who are in a hurry and who do not have the time to eat healthily every day. Spiralps is a natural drink, which can become a simple and effective habit, which offsets the deficiencies and other kinds of problems encountered by people who lead very active lives.”
He added, “The Swiss are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of what they eat and the impact this has on their physical and mental well-being. They are looking for fresh, locally produced, healthy products. The consumer trend towards raw food – that is, basic, natural food eaten "as such" – is steadily gaining strength, as is the demand for local production and consumption. Spiralps drinks can be purchased individually from local Swiss food stores promoting organic produce, such as Manor, leshop.ch, alnatura, Sun Store, Amavita, and Hiltl. Priced between 3.90 CHF and 4.90 CHF, a 200ml bottle of Spiralps can be kept for up to 60 days in the fridge due to the cold pasteurization process.
