Do you love cooking and are always looking for an excuse to try out new recipes on others? Would you like to broaden your circle of friends and have some different guests over for dinner for a change? If so, then you may like to try out a new concept called Surfing Dinner that was launched in Lausanne last month with overwhelming success!
Explaining the concept to knowitall.ch, Bernat Palou, one of the two organizers, told us, "The idea behind Surfing Dinner is very simple. Participants are invited to register as a cooking in team, in pairs, at least 5 days before the event. 3 days before the event they will receive a geo-optimized route map of their itinerary for the evening, during which they will be expected to prepare either an apéro and starter, a main dish, or a dessert and cocktail."
Co-organizer, Cleo Moulin, continued, "The adventure starts at 7pm when you head to the rendevous for the first of your three courses. As you move onto a different location for each new course, you will meet a different set of people, so that by the end of the evening you will have met 12 different people, all keen to discover the gastronomic wonders of Lausanne’s amateur chefs! At 11pm, having surfed the city and found its hidden delights, everyone gets together in the same pub to have a chat over a drink and compare experiences."
Surfing Dinners are entirely free. Partcipants are encouraged to use organic food where possible, and to travel between the different course locations either on foot or by public transport. If you can’t find a cooking partner, you are invited to post a request on the organizers’ Facebook page.
After a taster session in December, the first official event was held in May this year and received nearly 90 registrations from aspiring dinner hosts. Given the huge success of this event, Bernat and Cleo plan to repeat the dinners approximately every 2months, and expect to receive between 100 and 200 guests for future events once word spreads beween friends. At the moment Surfing Dinners are held only in Lausanne, but it is hoped that the events can be rolled out to neighboring cities including Geneva, Neuchâtel, Fribourg, and Zurich, if suitable organizers can be found.
Anyone interested in setting up a Surfing Dinner in their neigborhood should contact Bernat or Cleo. If your town has more than 20,000 inhabitants, then they will be happy to share their experience with you, including access to their brand, website, route optimization tools, emailing facilities, facebook page and coaching!
The next event in Lausanne will be held on 5 July, 2013. To find out more information visit the website at www.surfingdinner.com. If you would like to take part, then make sure you sign up by Sunday, 30 June at the latest!
