Jennie Chen Volet is a highly qualified and experienced hypnotherapist, who has recently opened an office in the Geneva Plainpalais area. Keen to spread the word about her new business, she offered a session to Lisa Cirieco-Ohlman last November. Lisa was suffering from unrestful sleep due to clenching and grinding her teeth. Would hypnotherapy help?
Before she went, Lisa asked those around her if they had ever tried hypnotherapy and what impression they had of it. Most had preconceptions involving losing control and being under the power of someone else... how wrong they were!
Jennie's smile, welcome, and calm disposition were a welcome sight at the rendez-vous. “Sit down, take off your shoes, put your feet up, and let's talk. I'll explain what I am going to do, that you will be conscious all the time, that at any moment you can scratch your nose if you like! Your mind has layers of conscious, preconscious, and subconscious. All I am going to do is lead you there. Once we are at the subconscious we will try to unlock the reasons for clenching and grinding your teeth. Once we have discovered the basis we can find alternatives. Understanding is the key.”
Wikipedia’s definition of “understanding” is “a psychological process related to an abstract or physical object, such as a person, situation, or message whereby one is able to think about it and use concepts to deal adequately with that object.”
As a Board Certified Hypnotherapist, Jennie studied with the world's most well-respected hypnotist, Jerry Kein. Jennie has techniques to help clients who are struggling with various problems to make a specific change in their lives. She explains, “Combining advanced hypnosis and NLP techniques (neuro-linguistic programming), I help my clients unleash the power of their own subconscious mind so they can make a permanent change with ease.
“In addition to the direct suggestion and guided imagery approach (the most common practice in hypnotherapy), I am skilled with powerful insight-based techniques. As a mom of 3 children, a parenting coach, and a certified parenting instructor, I work well with adults as well as children. I am passionate about hypnosis and self-development. It is extremely fulfilling to see the progress and results my clients achieve.
“I usually work with clients who are struggling to make a change they want (be it to overcome public speaking anxiety, to stop smoking, or to sleep better at night). I use hypnosis to help clients find the real cause of their problem and I help them discover the power and inner wisdom of their subconscious mind so they can finally achieve the result they want.
“The aim is always to help the client as quickly and efficiently as possible. Many challenges people are faced with can be tackled in one session.”

Jennie writes on her website: Hypnosis is an everyday occurring phenomenon or state of the mind where we are inwardly focused. We probably experience this state multiple times a day. For example, we experience the phenomenon of hypnosis when we watch a good movie. We are so absorbed by the plot we are able to physically experience fear, joy, sadness or other emotions that the movie elicits. Even though we are always somewhat aware that we are sitting in a movie theater with other people around us, we temporarily put their existence into the background. If you have daydreamed, you know how hypnosis feels like – a highly inwardly focused experience with heightened imagination.
When you visit Jennie for a session, all you have to do is to focus and follow her guidance. However, it does depend on how willing you are to allow her treatment. How would you answer the following questions when you hear a suggestion?
— I am not comfortable with it
— I am indifferent to it
— I like it and I hope it will work
— I like it and I know it will work
According to Jennie, if you answer any of the first 3 options, the "suggestion" will be rejected; only in the last case will the suggestion be accepted. It is extremely important that you adopt the right mental attitude at the conscious level for the suggestions you want during a session.
Jennie comments, "There is no danger of revealing anything you don’t want. The worst things that can happen during a session is you fall asleep or not go into hypnosis. Hypnosis and meditation are similar. However in meditation the goal is to empty the mind, while in hypnosis the goal is to reprogram the subconscious mind."
Lisa discovered from probing back and back and back into her childhood and infancy — even as a baby — memories that she had forgotten. The memory of sucking her thumb until age 7, being told off as a baby to stop sucking her thumb, and memories of crying in her crib, looking at the door handle for someone to come and take her helped tie the whole thing together. Has the comfort of thumb-sucking now been replaced by grinding and clenching her teeth? “It was a revelation to me that something so long ago was brought back up to the surface”, Lisa admits. The result: a more conscious link to her jaw and being in control of what she does with it.
