Expecting a baby can be daunting at the best of times, but when you are faced with a barrage of information, all provided in a foreign language that you are also finding difficult to master, then it can be simply overwhelming.

Even if you are able to speak French quite fluently, you may well be unfamiliar with some of the more technical vocabulary used to describe the birthing process and all that it entails.

To help your pregnancy run as smoothly as possibly, and to provide you with all the information you may need throughout the 9 months and beyond, there is help at hand in the form of an English-speaking nurse/midwife and lactation consultant, who has worked in the Nyon area as an independent midwife for more than 10 years. Running her own business called Easybirth, Kathryn Granges works under the supervision of the Swiss federation for midwives (FSSF) and now finds herself in considerable demand within the English-speaking community.

Kathryn told knowitall.ch, “When I first moved to Switzerland, there were not so many English-speakers around, so I learnt to speak French whilst working in the regional hospital in Sion. As soon as my British training was recognized, I was free to work anywhere in Switzerland, so when I moved to Nyon I quickly began work as a hospital midwife, before moving again to Geneva where I worked as a teacher of obstetrics for student nurses.”

After a short break during which she was able to raise her own young family, Kathryn resumed work as an independent midwife. As a native English-speaker, Kathryn has seen a huge increase in demand for her services at her practice in Nyon, to the point that she is now able to offer regular birth preparation classes for her clients as well as additional services such as breast-feeding support, post-natal follow up, and first stage accompaniment at home.

Kathryn continued, “As well as expanding my practice in the Nyon area, I continue to develop my skills through regular training in childbirth preparation. I qualified as a Lactation Consultant in 2003, and, have, more recently, completed further training in relaxation techniques, with a particular focus on the positive effects of deep relaxation to alleviate discomfort during childbirth.”

Whether you are planning to deliver at home or in the local hospital, in a clinic or in a birthing centre, Kathryn’s classes have been designed to provide you will all the information, advice and encouragement you need to enjoy your pregnancy experience.  Her work mostly involves helping new parents get off to a good start, but mothers expecting their second child can also benefit from timely reminders and an overview of the latest birthing options available to parents in the region. From birth preparation to home visits during the first days, all her work is covered by Swiss basic insurance.

Running approximately every month, according to demand, Kathryn’s next group ‘childbirth preparation class’ will be held over the weekend of 13-14 July, 2013.  During the two days of classes, nine hours of pertinent information aimed at helping new parents become familiar with the necessary tools for birth will be provided.  The group is small and interactive, with just 3 to 5 couples per session. Visit www.easybirth.ch for more information.

Kathryn also offers private classes to couples in their own homes. These classes are more focused on the specific needs and desires of each couple.
