The Anhugar School for gifted children has recently moved to new premises in La Rippe sur Crassier, enabling it too offer a wider range of services to all children, gifted or not. The new school is now situated in the Colonie St Gervais, in an infrastructure completely dedicated to children, in a secured park with football, hockey and basketball fields. The school has direct access to the forest in the Jura for its explorations.
Formed as an Association at the beginning of 2011, with the aim of offering bilingual (French/English) science workshops to gifted children aged between 5 and 12, on Wednesday afternoons, the school is now be able to offer activities to more children, including homework assistance, English and German language classes, and individual coaching sessions. A new “regroupment” class is also being offered to gifted children on Saturdays.
Director, Emmanuelle Derly, told knowitall.ch, “We started the science workshops in January 2011 with 4 children and this number has increased steadily throughout the year to 12, which is the maximum we enroll per group. Gifted children sometimes suffer from learning difficulties (dyslexia being a common one) and social difficulties (they have often been bullied at school and are weary of strangers). We insist on creating a trusting group, avoiding new faces appearing each week, where the children can feel safe and where we can get to know them individually and give them personal support, care and assistance.”
Joint Director, Fabienne Ducard, added, “With the additional resources now available to us in La Rippe, we are able to offer, for gifted children only, a Saturday morning regroupement class (during the ski season, the group will move to another day, to free the weekend for skiing). This regroupment class is more academic (the children write and do maths),while remaining based on self discovery, exploring subjects of interest to the children. Among the topics for this class is the study of the trip of Captain cook and his discovery of the Sandwich islands, the 5 Plato solids, the deserts of this planet, and the life of the surviving nomads.”
She concluded, "Thanks to our specific learning methodology, unique in Switzerland, gifted children can now expect an alternative or a complement to traditional schooling. Although gifted children generally have extraordinary intellectual abilities, there is often a big discrepancy between these abilities and their performance at school. At the Anhugar School, we aim to give these children their self-confidence back so they can avoid failure at school.”
For all children, gifted or not, the Anhugar School now offers language classes (8 children max) and homework assistance (12 children max). There is also e-learning provision for gifted children who are home-schooled.
