IILbuilding3

A new foundation stone has been laid, marking the beginning of a major new phase in the development of the Geneva-based bilingual international school, Institut International de Lancy (IIL).

On the 18th March last month, more than 1500 students, parents, teachers and administrative staff attended a special ceremony at the school in the presence of Mr Foerster, the Directory General, and Mr Pellé, member of the IIL’s Association board. Mr Lorenzini, counsellor of the Ville de Lancy also gave a speech in which he remarked that IIL was the oldest school in Lancy…but still very much “alive”!

The event started with an impressive array of 93 flags carried by students from their respective countries, who marched proudly through the grounds in a colourful and touching parade.  Everyone at the ceremony witnessed the grand unveiling of an engraved silver box, which will serve as a Time Capsule to be inlaid in one of the main walls of the new building. Those who were unable to attend the ceremony can still view the proceedings on https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B-lZZ5BThVNzUUZ2cFVnb2o4Qm8&usp=sharing.

With an investment of nearly 30 million francs, the new building represents the fourth and final phase of a major project to improve the infrastructure of the school, which is expected to be completed in July 2017.

With 5000m2 of working space available, the building will include:

  • an amphitheatre with seating for 200 people
  • a canteen for 400 to 500 students, which will be the 3rd canteen on the campus
  • a double gymnasium - auditorium with seating for up to 600 people
  • offices for the administrative staff
  • art rooms
  • modular classroom space to facilitate collaborative learning, in line with the demands of 21st Century teaching and learning.

IIL offers both English and French teaching programs to around 1500 students aged from 3 to 19. With a strong emphasis on language teaching, the school aims for a bilingual outcome for all its pupils.

As an IB World School, IIL is authorised to teach the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). In addition, it is a Cambridge examination centre and students sit for IGCSE examinations on campus.

As a member of the GESBF (Groupement des Ecoles Suisses qui préparent au Baccalauréat Français) and under the aegis of the Academie de Grenoble, the school also prepares students for the French Baccalaureate and for the Diplôme National du Brevet.
