Win a free place on a two-day workshop for business professionals
Have you ever met someone going through a serious life crisis, who was managing it with incredible grace and strength, and wondered how they did it?
Niamh Kromodimedjo, Founder of Manage With Clarity, told knowitall.ch that she once had a friend in this situation, who explained that her clear, positive and empowered attitude was a result of something called “The Work of Byron Katie”. This “fluke” encounter sparked Niamh’s interest in The Work and resulted in a new career and a dramatically improved life, which she now manages with much greater clarity and confidence than before. It also helped her enormously to deal with some life crises of her own, including the passing of her father after an 18 month illness with cancer and the decision and process of donating a kidney to her sister.
Following a three-year intensive training with Byron Katie's Institute for The Work, Niamh became a Certified Facilitator of The Work in January 2012 and shortly afterwards set up her own business in Geneva, called Manage With Clarity, to use this process with her clients. Describing the key elements to us, Niamh said, “The Work is a simple, yet astoundingly powerful process of inquiry, which questions people’s beliefs about any stressful situation and enables them to see things from a completely different perspective “without the blinkers”. They also learn practical ways to develop themselves, applying what they have learned from the inquiry.”
Although Niamh works with clients from all walks of life, she specializes in using The Work to help business professionals become more effective in the workplace, navigate stressful situations and manage their professional lives with greater clarity and confidence.
Niamh uses the words of Albert Einstein to summarize the process of The Work "Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics." Niamh adds, “If we question the reality that Einstein talks about, with an open mind, we can literally change our reality using The Work.”
According to Niamh, professionals who experience this process typically report dramatically improved relationships with their boss, staff or business partner, substantial reductions in stress, clearer and quicker decision making, and increased confidence in both their professional and personal lives.
To understand how this process works, here is a brief account of some work Niamh recently did with a client. The client was a manager of a team who was extremely frustrated with the way his team was handling a project. Niamh guided the client through getting his thoughts down on paper and then identified a belief for them to work through that was causing him the most stress. His belief was “My staff are not cooperating with me”. Niamh brought her client through the process of inquiry, asking him very specific questions, from which he was able to gain useful insights. At the end of the process he noticed that his belief had been preventing him from understanding where his staff were coming from and how his behaviour had contributed towards things occurring the way they were. He could see that he was not cooperating with his staff by his lack of clear and firm instruction and by not taking the necessary measures when staff were not following through with his requests. His insights resulted in him feeling more connected with his staff, more trusting of them and enabled him to communicate with them with much greater clarity. In the following sessions, with Niamh’s guidance, he identified many similar beliefs which were causing him to feel unmotivated and passionless about his work – he realized that he was not cooperating with himself in that it wasn’t the professional life he had envisioned for himself. Together with Niamh, he defined and carried through on realistic targets to develop in his professional life. This resulted in much greater clarity about his situation, a dramatically improved relationship with and understanding of his staff, a renewed passion for his work and an ability to communicate his needs in a clearer way. Niamh says, “We might be able to reach these conclusions quite quickly with a coach, but it is the process of “dropping in” in The Work that makes the difference in increasing our awareness and opening us up.”
