visionsreel

For its 50th edition of Visions du Réel, Festival international de cinéma Nyon (5 – 13 April), the Festival has a look at the Americas and Australia.

First with What You Gonna Do When the World's on Fire? about the wave of police brutality who hit the African-American community in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in the summer of 2017, followed by Golden Age, who observes the lives of very rich pensioners in a world full of parties and entertainment in their retirement home in Miami.

Pahokee lets us discover a community of a small rural town located in the Florida Everglades and finally Dreams of the Outback takes a particular interest in the Australian Aborigines.

What You Gonna Do When the Wolrd’s on Fire?
Grand Angle
Roberto Minervini | 123’ | 2019 | Italy, United States
VO English | ST English, French

Monday 8 April, 20:45, Grande Salle and Thursday 11 April, 21:15, Capitole Leone

SWISS PREMIERE. It is the summer of 2017. A tidal wave of police killings has hit the African-American community. A group of Black Panthers seeks justice. But racism and violence are engrained in the cogs of white justice. Roberto Minervini creates a highly charged counter shot to his previous film Louisiana (The Other Side), presented at the Festival de Cannes in 2015. Shot in highly contrasted black and white, the film is as lyrical as it is political.

Golden Age
National Competition
Carole Messmer | 76’ | 2019 | Switzerland
VO English | ST French

Sunday 7 April, 18:15, Théâtre de Marens, Monday 8 April, 10:00, Colombière and Tuesday 9 April, 18:00, Théâtre de Grand-Champ, Gland
WORLD PREMIERE. Who said that old age has to be boring? Welcome to the Palace, in Miami, a retirement home where the wealthy residents are pampered in an abundance of parties, luxury and entertainment, as if to try and suppress the fear of death. Golden Age questions, in a dizzying visual whirlwind, our relationship with old age in the most universal way.

Pahokee
International Feature Film Competition
Ivete Lucas | 112’ | 2019 | United States
VO English | ST English, French

Wednesday 10 April, 18:00, Grande Salle et Thursday 11 April, 10:00, Grande Salle
INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE. Ivete Lucas and Patrick Bresnan create a detailed and incredibly nuanced portrait of Pahokee, a small rural town located in the Florida Everglades. A community tightly knit together that struggles with financial insecurities and a bleak future. A powerful portrait of a forgotten part of the United States, absent from the current political discourse.

Dreams of the Outback
International Feature Film Competition
Jannik Splidsboel | 75’ | 2019 | Denmark
VO English | ST English, French

Saturday 6 April, 18:30, Grande Salle and Sunday 7 April, 10:15, Grande Salle

WORLD PREMIERE. Australia once wondered if the Aborigines were part of the wildlife or if they should be considered as human beings in their own right. In the region of Kimberley, Jannik Splidsboel sets off to encounter members of this community. Some have painfully erased their culture while others are trying to find it again and keep it alive.
