Plural abstractions (1950-1980)
Collection of the Gandur Foundation for Art

Guest curator: Yan Schubert, Gandur Foundation for Art

The Art Museum of Pully is collaborating with the Gandur Foundation for Art on an exhibition devoted to informal painting from the 1950s to the 1980s.

The years following the Second World War saw a great artistic effervescence. Paris quickly regains its place as a cultural capital and attracts painters from all over the world. The geometric trend, which originated in the avant-gardes of the early twentieth century, then undergoes new developments. Many artists put the emphasis on gesture or matter, use new techniques and rethink painting and its media.

Composed of works from the Gandur Foundation for Art rarely presented to the Swiss public, the exhibition offers an original journey through the bubbling production of the 1950s to 1980s, coming from both sides of the Atlantic.

Focusing on the plural forms that abstraction took during this period, it shows the main trends: the lyrical and gestural abstraction of Georges Mathieu or Hans Hartung, the abstract expressionism of Pierre Soulages or Sam Francis, the geometric abstraction of Victor Vasarely or François Morellet, the minimalist painting of Martin Barré, the kinetic sculpture of Jean Tinguely or a monumental mobile by Alexandre Calder. As for the moving Supports/Surfaces, which challenges traditional pictorial means, it marks both a conclusion to this period of intense experimentation and the beginning of an adventure that continues to this day.

The Gandur Foundation for Art was created in 2010 by Jean Claude Gandur, a great art collector, in order to make his internationally renowned collections accessible to a broad public. Based in Geneva and recognized as being of public utility, the Foundation is committed to preserving, documenting, enriching and exhibiting its collections in renowned institutions in Switzerland and abroad.
