THE ART OF CORPORATE COMMUNICATION: INSIGHTS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
Thursday 01 November 2018

1st November 2018 6.30 – 7.30 followed by networking cocktail

Sponsored by the MA in Communications Management, Media Communication Department, Webster University Geneva

This event is free to all and held at Webster University Geneva.

“Effective communication is the foundation on which companies and careers are built and a crucial component of lasting success.”
American Management Association[1]

With rapidly changing technology and fake news, communication in the traditional sense has disappeared for good, whilst effective communication remains more important than ever.
Understanding the multidimensional nature of 21stcentury communication can give us a competitive edge and help us harness the opportunities that emerging technologies bring.

To celebrate the launch of Webster Geneva’s new interdisciplinary MA in Communications Management, the Media Communications Department will host a series of presentations that address different challenges facing communicators.

Four professors spanning a range of fields (media history and theory, humanitarian communication, business communication, international negotiation, marketing and social science) connect their academic knowledge and professional expertise to shed light on the challenges of persuading, marketing and measuring the impact of communications in the current, turbulent political and economic landscape.

Participants will also have the opportunity to learn more about Webster Geneva’s MA in Communications Management. The event will be followed by a Q&A and a free networking cocktail during which you will have the opportunity to meet the professors who will teach on the new MA.

The event will be moderated by Sarah Grosso, PhD, Media Communications Department, Webster University Geneva.

Presentations

Introduction: What do the media do to people? A changing media landscape
Dr. Valérie Gorin, PhD, Media Theory & Humanitarian Communication
The media landscape is radically changing. How does this affect the way we communicate?

1/10 of a Second Persuasion
Prof. Katarzyna Jagodzinska, PhD, Intercultural Negotiation & Communication

"One mark of a great man is the power of making lasting impressions upon the people he meets." (Winston Churchill).

The psychological secret weapon of effective persuasion is the ability to control the impressions we make. Jagodzinka introduces us to some of the key elements of persuasion including emotions and ego management, a strategic application of power tactics and precise verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as a bullet proof master plan involving perception management.

Standing out in front of the crowd: marketing in a sea of media messages
Prof. Ron Banks, MBA, Marketing strategy

The number of marketing messages people are exposed to on a daily base has grown exponentially; last year, marketing experts estimated that American consumers were exposed to around 4,000 to 10,0000 advertisements each day.[2] Prof. Banks provides some insights into how stand out in front of the crowd in this crowded media landscape.

Measure your communication impact
Dr. Glenn O’Neil, PhD, Communication evaluation & research methodology

How can we ensure that our communications are as effective as possible? A constant challenge raised by communicators is their ability to measure their results. Learn about the latest trends in evaluating communications.

Enrolment is now open for the MA in Communications Management starting in January 2019.

This event is part of the Spotlight Seminar Series organised by the Media Communications Department, Webster University Geneva, to shed light on contemporary issues in the media, communications and photography.
