Frankenstein by Nick Dear produced by Geneva English Drama Society 2-6 October 2018 Stage production based on the novel by Mary Shelley Théâtre de l’Espérance Tickets: CHF 30 and CHF 20, numbered seats
2018 marks the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s celebrated novel, Frankenstein, written and set in Geneva. When published, this radical work shook contemporary society as the first work of science fiction, the first work of gothic horror, and the greatest romantic novel of the era. Now, the story returns to its original Geneva roots and the terrifying, tragic confrontation between a man obsessed with his own quest for knowledge, and his creation, a being who did not ask to be created and craves only to be loved. It is 1818, Europe is in the aftermath of revolution and bloody conflict, and in transition between superstition and science. During that dark, rainy summer, on the shores of the Lac Léman, reason and emotion collide in a primal struggle still horrifyingly recognizable today. When fear compels Victor Frankenstein, an obsessive young scientist, to abandon his own greatest creation, he cannot imagine the horrific consequences that will be unleashed upon his family and his world. This stark production will cut to the heart of this tale of life, death, and desperate longing.
