In 2018, Château de Prangins celebrates 20 years as home to the Swiss National Museum in French-speaking Switzerland. To honour this milestone the artist Muma, who created a social sculpture in the historical kitchen garden back in 2008, returns on Saturday 29 September 2018 with 50,000 candles and a work entitled “Flowers of Fire”. Some 500 volunteers will be taking part in a light performance that promises to be both beautiful and an unforgettable collective experience. The illumination is a reference to the idea of clarity dear to the Age of Enlightenment – an era of which Château de Prangins is an iconic monument.

The commune of Prangins is partnering with this unique event and organising its village fête on the same day, with food trucks and drinks stands. Sunday 30 September 2018 sees the tenth edition of “Déjeuner sur l’herbe” (Lunch on the Grass), with its famous historical costume parade open to all that, this time round, takes us on an amazing journey through the period from 1700 to 1920, from powdered wigs to pixie haircuts.

Flowers of Fire and Muma
Muma, the sculptural artist and orchestrator of Flowers of Fire, describes a social sculpture as follows:

“A social sculpture is a participatory artwork in which the human bond is the most important material. In a social sculpture, preparation is an integral part of the work: the search for volunteers, the different layers of the project, integrating it into the surroundings, media coverage before and after the event are all part of the process. Candles crystallise all this human energy in a magical moment that will nourish collective memory.”

Sculptural artist Muma also staged the Garden of Light performance on 4 October 2008 to mark 10 years of the Swiss National Museum at Château de Prangins. He was born in Catalonia and has lived in Lausanne for more than 30 years. Initially drawn to music and painting, Muma undertakes a formative journey after which he feels driven to broaden his knowledge. Choosing Lausanne as the place to do so, he enrols at the city’s university and then ECAL, the university of art and design. Open-minded and enthusiastic, Muma soon begins building bridges between art, literature and collective rituals. From 2003 his works take on a monumental aspect, becoming participatory performances that bring him international fame.
