To help home owners learn some of the basic rules about interior design, I run a series of workshops on different themes that are carefully chosen to give clients the confidence they need to make their own decisions about personal projects within their home.
This month’s workshop kicked off with the Theory of Colour and how we can use this to create interior colour schemes.
Here are some of the key points our attendees took away with them:
- Colour is one of the most simple, inexpensive and effective ways to improve the decoration of our spaces. It can change mood, ambience or atmosphere depending on what colours we choose.
Choose cool receding colours of blue, green, and purple to add a sense of space and airiness. Warm, advancing colours of red, orange, pink and yellow should be used to create warm, inviting and intimate spaces. - Working with the Colour Wheel opens up a multitude of colour schemes.
Choose Harmonious Colour Schemes to create a restful, relaxing atmosphere in your home. For starters, these can include combinations of blue and green or purple and red tones. - Alternatively, Contrasting Colour Schemes will add excitement and vitality to your home space. These are achieved by using combined colour tones of purple and yellow, orange and blue and many more.
We all have colour preferences and dislikes that affect the way we dress and decorate our homes. Additionally, we are attracted to seasonal colour trends that we see in magazines and showroom visits. - How do colours in our home effect our emotions?
Red is emotionally intense and can stimulate an increased heartbeat. It is also appetite inducing, so great in dining rooms.
Blue is peaceful and causes our bodies to produce calming chemicals, so often used in bedrooms.
Our next workshop on 15 October will focus on "Planning your Home Project".
