Are you that person who’s first question to me is ‘What’s the ROI of Social Media?’ If so, I’m going to start you off with a little slide share by the very wise Gary Vaynerchuk. Click on the link below to access the slides:

Still with me? Great. So you now know that ROI is not about the tool, but about the mechanic using the tool.

So let’s talk about the mechanic…Let’s see why Social Media is not working for you.

1. Your Website Sucks

Sometimes clients still ask me if they can just use a Facebook page and not bother with a website. No, no and no. As I mention in my e-book, your website is your home, and with Social Media you are sending out invitations to come visit your place. But let’s say you are hosting a big party at your house. What’s the first thing you do before you invite people? You clean up, right? Well, you need to do the same thing on your website! If your website sucks, people will leave that party again very quickly ! Very often the website is so out dated that it doesn’t comply with today’s use of Social Media. What’s the point of writing great content, if people don’t have the option to reshare it on their social platforms?? So be very honest: is your website ready for Social Media?

2. You Don’t Create Content

If your website is up to speed, but you are still convinced that Social Media is not working for you it might be because you are not creating content. In order to have something of value to say on Social Media you need to create your own content – and share other people’s content. This can be written content, visuals, audio files or videos. May post ‘Help! I don’t know what to share on Social Media‘ might help you come up with some other ideas.

3. You’re not consistent

You are frustrated because you have been posting on Facebook for 2 months now and still haven’t made any sales? Sorry to disappoint you, but Social Media is not a quick fix. The word ‘social’ is in there for a reason. It’s about developing social relationships with your audience. So consistency is key here !

4. You’re not engaging, just blasting

If you’re too focused on the results, and not enough on the relationships, Social Media won’t work for you either. If you use it just to blast out your stuff, without engaging, retweeting, commenting, liking, resharing other people’s content, people will notice and stay away from you. Again, it’s not about the tool, it’s about the mechanic using the tool !

Please don’t take this post the wrong way! It might sound a bit rude, but it’s supposed to be helpful. If you have any questions, please post them below in the comments and I’d be happy to help !
