Roads in this desolate region of the Mojave snake between groups of Joshua trees. In the background, light from the casinos of Primm (30 km away) and Las Vegas (80 km away) illuminate the sky.

A former pupil at the International School of Geneva (Ecolint), Julian Kilker is returning to Geneva to introduce visitors at the Cité du Temps exhibition center to the wide, open spaces of the American Southwest Mojave desert. Running from 12 April to 13 May 2012, his “Time in the Mojave” exhibition will document, through a series of photographs, the beauty of decay in hauntingly beautiful landscapes, which are often overlooked or even bypassed by highway travellers.  The focus of Julian's work is on the complex interactions between people and artefacts, poignantly mirroring contemporary concerns about the impact of rapid technological change on the environment.

All of the photographs in “Time in the Mojave” are on fabric squares measuring 1.75 metres by 1.75 metres, using dye sublimation printing. By shooting the pictures at night and using moonlight, Julian minimises visual clutter to emphasise his chosen subjects.  Enchanting colours have been added to some pieces on location either by nature, or by highly artistic light painting. As a photographer, Julian succeeds in telling a spectrum of stories on the interplay of man and his surroundings: for instance, as the lights of vehicles streak past dilapidated buildings, he draws attention to the driver’s disregard for a place that once could have been called “home”.

cyclopodjetdeau

by Lisa Cirieco-Ohlman

What better way to spend time than to take the Cyclopod for a guided tour in English! This specially-designed bike is fitted with a covered bench for two people. Starting in the Jardin Anglais in Geneva, allow yourself to be strolled along at a comfortable pace, absorbing the city in a different way.

The concept was initiated by Aurélie Anstett back in 2009. After two years she was given permission from the city of Geneva and the first paying customers were accepted in Spring 2011.
  • Do you know how many flowers are used to make up the flower clock?
  • Do you know what the Pierre du Niton is used for?
  • How long does it take for water to flow from one end of the lake to Geneva?
  • Where can you purchase perche fish fresh out of the lake?
  • How tall is the jet d’eau?
Not only will Aurélie answer all these questions but will also recount the city’s history and show you the sights of Geneva. She is very knowledgeable and can answer questions for you or your guests. As the Cyclopod is state-of-the-art with assisted pedaling and is made from 95% recycled materials, it makes for a great environmentally-friendly thing to do!

olympicboat2

From April till October 2012 and 2013, The Olympic Museum will have a temporary presence on the MS Helvétie, a boat belonging to the Compagnie générale de navigation (General Navigation Company, CGN) moored in front of The Museum. This Belle Époque boat, one of the largest in the CGN fleet, has not been used for the last nine years, after being retired following 75 years' service on Lake Geneva. Its 600m2 of exhibition space will display a significant portion of The Museum's Olympic contents.

Entry to the boat will be free and will enable visitors unaware of the closure of The Museum still to review some Olympic memorabilia. Between 100,000 and 200,000 visitors are expected during the renovation period, according to The Museum's estimates.

This year the first day will be April 5th, 2012. Make sure to take advantage of the great Spring weather!

parsenn-davos-family-skiing

If you think the skiing season is coming to an end, then think again.  In the latest entry in her popular series of "Skiing with Kids" blogs for Ciao Bambino, Amie O’Shaughnessy gives several reasons why you should visit Davos-Klosters before the season is out.

In her blog you will discover all that Davos - the highest city in Europe - has to offer in terms of urban, sophisticated pleasures, giving visitors more than just access to skiing.

When it comes to skiing, families are warned that Davos-Klosters is comprised of six different ski areas, with each mountain area having it’s own distinct personality and ski offering. However, not all these mountains are interconnected, so if you have kids taking ski lessons in one area of the resort, and you want to explore another area, you need to allow plenty of time to travel between the two.

Thanks again, Amie!

quilts

“Inspiration comes easy when surrounded by beautiful scenery. Relaxation comes easy when all of the other daily things are taken care of. Creativity comes easy when surrounded by laughter and fun.”

This is what Elita Sharpe, Founder of Busy Needle Quilting, told knowitall.ch when she described the weekend getaway for quilters that she is organizing this year in St. Gervais in France, about 1 hour from Geneva.

Taking place from Thursday 26 April through to Sunday 29 April, this quilting retreat will provide both new and accomplished quilters the opportunity to get creative in a relaxing and inspirational environment amongst friends.  It is also possible to join the retreat on a Friday if you are not able to get away earlier, and transport can be provided from Geneva if needed.
