The Association Servette Rugby Club de Genève (ASRCG) - in collaboration with Genève Sport SA, the Geneva Cantonal Rugby Association and the Swiss Rugby Federation - has launched a new rugby initiative, the Geneva Rugby Cup, which will take place for the first time on Friday 8 August 2014 at Stade de Genève.

The Geneva Rugby Cup 2014 will feature the following matches:

  • 18h00: The first official match of Servette Rugby Club against Grasshopper Zürich Rugby Club

  • 20h30: An all French Top 14 clash between Stade Français Paris and LOU (Lyon Olympique Universitaire)

The Stade Français Paris, thirteen-time French champion, is one of the most prestigious clubs in Europe.  Gonzalo Quesada, Sporting Director, confirmed, “We are delighted to compete against the LOU in Geneva. This fixture, against a newly promoted club to the Top 14, is very important to us, as it is our final preparation match before the start of the championship. Naturally, we want to be in a position to prepare for the 2014-2015 season on a positive note”.

LOU (Lyon Olympique Universitaire) achieved its objectives last season by ending the season as champions of Pro D2 in France and the club will take its place amongst the Top 14 teams for season 2014/15. Franck Isaac-Sibille, Vice President and General Manager of LOU, is looking forward to the challenge: “The game against Stade Francais will be a great opportunity for us to measure ourselves against one of the best teams in the Top 14. Also, this final preparation friendly match for our players and our staff will take place in front of a new rugby audience, in a prestigious city not far from our home town of Lyon! ”

The launch of the Geneva Rugby Cup is a key part of the strategy to attract international events to Stade de Genève and to the city of Geneva, which is reflected by the various football matches taking place in Geneva throughout summer 2014.

Hugh Quennec, President of the Servette Rugby Club, said “The Geneva Rugby Cup is a great promotion for the sport of rugby and further proves that the Stade de Genève and the city of Geneva is capable of hosting any type of event.”

Peter Schüpbach, President of the Swiss Rugby Federation, added, “The Swiss Rugby Federation eagerly awaits this great initiative and would like to thank the Association Servette Rugby Club de Genève (ASRCG), Genève Sport SA, and the Geneva Cantonal Rugby Association for contributing to the development of rugby in Geneva and in Switzerland. This event is well placed to be a success, and the Swiss Rugby Federation fully supports the team of organisers in promoting and celebrating rugby.”

The organisers intend to make the Geneva Rugby Cup an annual event that brings together the best teams in Europe and offers an entertaining and fun supporter experience that reflects the values of rugby. The program of the event has been designed to encourage families to attend, and will start at 16h30 with the opening of the Rugby Village, where there will be music, rugby-based activities and refreshments during the build up and between the two matches. The goal is to ensure a celebration of rugby and its values: respect, passion, entertainment and team spirit.

Tickets are available from CHF10 (excluding fees) for the under sixteens and from CHF 20 (excluding fees) for adults. Tickets can be purchased exclusively from all Ticketcorner points as well as online at www.ticketcorner.ch.
