Since we wrote our recent article about English-speaking dentists in Geneva, we have had a number of requests via our website, to receive our list of recommended doctors and Healthcare providers practicing in Geneva, Vaud and neighbouring France.

As our readers know, we only provide information on businesses and services that have been recommended to us, or that we have experienced ourselves, so this list does not cover all medical practitioners in the region. For this you should consult a phone directory. However, if you want to find someone with a proven track record, indeed someone recommended to us by one of our readers, then you should ask for a copy of our list.

Going to the doctors and dentists can be quite a scary experience for many people, so it is not surprising that, even armed with a list of recommended practitioners, you may be tempted to put off making an appointment until the last possible moment. However, this need not be the case. Many of the professionals on our list have years of experience working with nervous patients and, indeed, one dentist on our list positively encourages them to visit her!

Based in Carouge, Dr. Dawson has been running her own practice for 10 years and not only provides a full range of dental treatment for both adults and children, but also makes use of relaxation techniques to help those who are anxious about visiting the dentist.  Standard treatments include fillings, crowns, and gum treatment, as well as cosmetic work such as tooth bleaching.

Dr. Dawson's team includes 2 assistants, 2 hygienists, an apprentice assistant, and a new dentist specializing in minor oral surgery. The focus of the practice is very much on the prevention of dental decay and prevention of gum disease, with patients being encouraged to make regular visits to the hygienist.

She told knowitall.ch, “I have a special interest in treating people who are nervous of coming for dental treatment.  I have a lot of experience as I used to run a clinic, which specialised in this in London. With a post graduate diploma in dental hypnosis, I have recently started using hypnosis and other relaxation techniques as an aid to helping patients who, for example, don’t like having injections or have a strong gag reflex. Fortunately, we don't often need to resort to hypnosis - in most cases, music or DVDs are very effective at distracting patients, especially children, during treatment! I also help people who have habits they would like to stop such as grinding, smoking and thumb sucking."

One reason why Dr. Cressida may have a talent for relaxing people is her personal interest in painting – a hobby that has a particularly calming effect on her, and which she is keen to pass on to her clients! She told knowitall.ch,

“I started off by just painting the mountains around me but now I'm interested in all landscapes. Mountains give people a mixture of emotions; they can be a calming, solid presence or rather frightening when you consider the dangers of being on them. This presents a dilemma for the artist. Does one challenge the viewer with a scene that evokes that power, or soothe them with a peaceful scene?”

She concluded, “Personally, I prefer to portray them as solid, tranquil and awe inspiring as that’s how I feel when I am up in the mountains looking at a view. I have been in the mountains on plenty of occasions in bad weather and feel no desire to reproduce my feelings of fear on canvas – I am doing this for fun after all!”

Dr. Dawson usually paints in oils, but has recently been experimenting with ink, water colors and the iPad, using an application called Brushes. Click here to view a selection of her oil paintings and here to view some of her iPad pictures.

Although Dr. Dawson studied art until she was 18 years old, she didn’t pick up a brush again until she was nearly 40. Since that time, she has had 3 exhibitions in Geneva and become a member of the Swiss Guild of Mountain Painters and the Palette Carougeoise, both of which have annual collective exhibitions. Her next exhibition will be held at the NEST Gallery in Geneva between 1st and 8th December, 2014. Look out for more details on this website nearer the time.

She is very happy to do commissions for clients: her oil paintings cost in the region of Fr. 400.- to Fr. 1200.-, depending on the size required. Her iPad pictures  usually measure 65 x 45 cm and are supplied on alubond.

So whether you are looking for a dentist with a calming influence or an artist with a talent for painting local scenes, why not pick up the phone and give Dr. Cressida Dawson a call!
